Emergency Ward
Over the past couple of years, the Bawjiase Polyclinic has gradually worked towards the development of a new Emergency Ward. Shown above on the left is a picture taken at the beginning of construction in July 2021, and on the right is one from our trip in May 2023. As we like to say, the project has been on “Ghana time!”
The Emergency Ward officially opened its doors in Fall 2024 and has been pivotal for the Bawjiase community by offering specialized services, ultimately reducing the number of referrals to other skilled facilities. Reducing referrals for treatment was essential in Bawjiase, where cost barriers often prohibit families from traveling to other facilities for care, sometimes resulting in adverse health outcomes. In critical situations, U4H sponsored families financially, covering ambulance, medication, and hospital stay costs to ensure they received life-saving care when finances or lack of insurance posed a barrier.
To support the development and services provided by the Emergency Ward, United for Health worked closely with Dr. Johnson, the clinic’s lead physician, to address material, medical equipment, and financial needs to ensure completion of the ward.
